So it was that time of the year again.. Carnival weekend! This was my first time going to carnival as an adult and I just had to share my experience with you guys. I last went to carnival when I was 13/14 (I think) and I can only remember very little parts from it and finally, at 23 years old I got to experience it in a totally different way.
Just to give you a quick background, one of my closest friends and a couple of her friends from university have created their own carnival costumes and offered an amazing carnival experience! Supernova Mas is the name and please check out their website here and Instagram here for more information about them. All the outfits were handmade by Afiya Romain-Bains who did such a brilliant job, I absolutely loved my costume, the detail was just perfect.
What was great about being part of this band was that we were given the full carnival experience. Breakfast, lunch and drinks were served for us and although we were part of Supernova Mas, we were also part of Karnival Mania, another pretty amazing band.
We arrived at our meeting point at 9:30 but didn't set off until 12! I was so eager to get going and really showcase the costumes. I had been feeling a bit anxious a few days before the event but on the actual day I just wanted to get going! As we made our way down the street the crowds were going crazy and just seemed so mesmerized by all the costumes. I actually felt like a celebrity for the day with all the cameras in our direction. Having people come up to you asking for photos was so cool haha.
It was quite amazing seeing how much of a good vibe carnival is, throughout the whole day you could just see everyone has having a good time. Whether it was the band or the crowd, everywhere you turned there were people just enjoying themselves. It's always lovely to see a celebration of culture and I was happy to have been a part of it. It was also amazing seeing all the different body types, everyone is just there to have fun and it doesn't matter what you look like, there's no 'perfect type', you wear what you wanna wear and you kill it!
The day ended at around 9pm and I can't even put into words how much pain my body was in. I'm still aching now! Lol.
Overall it was a really good day and I'm happy to have been part of the experience but I have to be honest and share something I didn't enjoy at all though and that was sexual harassment. This only however started to really happen when the day finished and we were trying to get home. From men grabbing you by the arm trying to get your attention, to being groped non stop, I was honestly mortified. I've never had to deal with that sort of behavior before so it definitely took me by surprise. I've always heard women say that just because we dress a certain way doesn't give someone the right to touch you inappropriately and I agree with that statement even more now than ever!
Anyway.. The beauty of having gone with a band is that you have security there to stop people from coming into your section and causing any problems which I really appreciated. I can't actually imagine the carnival experience being part of the crowd purely because it seems manic! I'm not the most confident person and sometimes big social gatherings tend to be overwhelming for me. I definitely stood outside of my comfort zone going to carnival this year in so many ways but I'm glad I did it.
Thank you to the ladies at Supernova Mas for offering me this experience. From the outfits to simply the service given leading up to carnival and throughout the whole day, it was just brilliant!
Love Sham x
