I can't believe it's been over 2 months since my last blog post... so much for being more consistent! Honestly, life really does take over sometimes and I must say, these last 2 months have been rather eventful for me.
So, I guess I'll start with the biggest thing that's happened recently for me and that was when I gave up social media for Lent! If anyone knows me well, they'll know that I am a bit of a social media addict. I'll be on it constantly and I can't go a day without checking on all the social media platforms on what's going on. In saying this, I had been wanting to cut down using social media for a while and just really needed a detox. It wasn't until my friend suggested that I give it up for 40 days as this was my bad habit. I never thought I could pull it off and honestly, neither did a few other people but I really did surprise myself!
Social media has really taken over people's lives and I feel like a lot of us have detached ourselves from simply living in the moment.
The main thing I realised about my time off social media was that I only went on it so much out of habit, there was no real reason as to why I went on it so much other than pure habit. It really bought me back to a time where we did not have social media at all! I also found that I was sleeping much earlier than usual, in addition to this I was sleeping better. I had more time to read books and just live in each moment. I wasn't in a rush to get my phone out and share everything which was another surprise to me because this was also a habit of mine!
Funny enough, I think I had the best time so far this year during the time of lent. I actually did a lot and it was nice to enjoy those moments, social media free. I went on my first 5K inflatable obstacle run, I went for a girls weekend away to celebrate my friends birthday, I went to Michelle Obama's book event, I went for a day out in London with Daniel and watched an incredible show. It was all so much fun.
Now that I'm back on social media, I do feel like I have cut down how much time I spend on it. Of course I still share stuff but not as much.
In a time where social media really is taking over, it's so important to just remind yourself of what life was like before it.. seriously. I say this also because of the mental aspect of how social media can affect an indiviual. I've had friends who have had to come off social media completely because it's affecting their mental health, I myself would be up till past midnight just scrolling through Instagram for no reason whatsoever.
I could go on about this for ages but my point is simply that I've learnt to live in the moment again and find a balance between being present as well as sharing those moments.
I'll be going to Thailand for 2 weeks on Friday and I'll be using that opportunity to have another social media detox. I mean... a semi social media detox lol, I've got to share at least some photos right?
Love Sham x
